Is repainting your garage door really worth it?

Updating your garage door

Your garage door, despite its age, still works well enough. It may be in wood or, more likely, metal, but in any case, should you put the time and effort into repainting once again this year, or would it be better to change the whole system?

Here are some points to consider that will help you make the right decision.

How old is your garage door?

Whether it is wood or metal, it’s not a question of its appearance that should be judged but rather your safety and that of your family. Most often when we speak about metal, it is more exactly steel, either insulated or not. Even if your wood door is a bit worn and faded with time, it’s not the door you have to examine, but what is behind the door.

If the hardware system is as old as the door and you can observe several rusted parts, particularly those installed at the bottom of the door, it’s high time you seriously consider changing the complete garage door system.

For wood doors, please realize that it’s completely normal for it to become heavier over time as it absorbs moisture. If you have a “sandwich” garage door, meaning two outside wood surfaces often of very thin plywood, it’s a good bet that the inner layer is either mineral wool insulation that will absorb a good quantity of water or a panel of polystyrene that can, as well, collect moisture but at a lesser degree.

If it is a solid wood door or one covered with solid wood, you should be aware that wood must maintain a certain level of moisture or it will split. This is true even if you have varnished it. Remember that wood must breathe, otherwise it quickly deteriorates.

Consider how much time it will take…

Repainting a garage door is a relatively easy job, but it does take quite a bit of time to do it. Remember, you want to make sure that the paint matches the original color or color palette of the outside of your home to make it as attractive as possible.

Also important is to ensure you have sufficient time to do the job right and that the weather cooperates because a poor paint job is even worse than not painting it. Plan enough drying time based on the quality and type of paint, the level of humidity and the ambient temperature. Wait for the ideal weather before starting. It should be dry and the temperature between approximately 60℉ and 75℉ (15℃ and 25℃). Don’t tackle the job of painting in full sun or in the rain. If you are completely changing the color, or alternately if there are traces of rust on the metal surface, you must prepare the surface and apply a coat of primer to get the best results. The primer will allow the paint to properly adhere.

Short on time? If you have a metal door and there aren’t any areas that need to be repaired – for instance, small dents – then hire a painter specialized in exteriors to do the work.

Okay, I’m starting to get an idea… So how much does a brand new door cost?

It just might surprise you. For a single door for a garage used to park your car, it can cost around $1000. If your garage door opener is relatively new and works well, it can easily be reused and reconnected to your new garage door.
