How to tell that a garage door business isn’t serious

Tips for choosing the best garage door professional

It’s not always easy to know at a first glance if a company in the garage door business is serious and competent. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, it only takes one rotten apple to spoil the whole barrel. A bad experience with one operation may leave you more than wary. It can also undermine the credibility of all the other garage door specialists who perform their jobs professionally and only want to provide you with work well done

Here are some indicators that should help you recognize incompetent, amateur operations, as well as how they act to gain your trust. Your goal is to be impressed, not disillusioned, by their expertise and how well they represent the garage door industry.

How do they operate?

  • We find them especially in heavily populated areas where we don’t know everyone, where there is little name recognition and it becomes difficult to judge the skill level of someone by a simple phone call. If you’ve ever lived in a small town where you know almost everyone, you’ll understand the difference.
  • They place a lot of advertising in phone directories, whether print or online. They try to fill them with large ads, even full-page ads, in printed directories.
  • They do business under different names, without a fixed address, with many telephone numbers, claiming they cover several large cities.
  • They say they are “Number 1” in everything, especially in any emergency work, providing fast service to repair your garage door.
  • In their ads or on their website, they use photos of their service trucks that don’t correspond at all to the ones they actually have.
  • Ultimately, they are trying to wow you.

Be suspicious….

  • Of the service and 24-hour repair they promise. This doesn’t mean they won’t do it, but what is their hourly rate to do the work?
  • If, from a lack of experience, they need to come back twice to your home to finish a repair job that could have been done the first time, often because they didn’t have the replacement parts in their service truck.
  • Of offers for discounts on all sorts of things… and that sound too good to be true.
  • If they often use a subcontractor to do their work, one without a vehicle with the real company’s name, and who is working to make ends meet.
  • If they don’t have a place of business, nor a warehouse to store an inventory of parts to repair your garage door.
  • When, from lack of knowledge of their trade, they tell you that you’d be better to replace your whole door with a new one, when a simple repair would be sufficient.

Ask questions and spend some time investigating

  • Request a list of satisfied customers living in your neighborhood who’ve had a new garage installed by them or a repair done. Meet or contact these people to gauge how happy they were with the work performed.
  • Ask those close to you (relatives, friends, co-workers) if the business you are thinking of using is reliable.
  • If you can, go visit their place of business, and judge for yourself how they serve their customers. If that’s not possible, at least check out the address they give you on Google Street View and see what the business looks like.
  • Frequently, serious businesses will present you with two or even three alternatives, whether to repair your garage or purchase a new door.
